ASSESSING
SPEAKING
In English
language assessment, speaking is certainly an important part. Speaking skills
are defined as skills that enable us to communicate effectively. However, assessments related to speaking are
of course related to pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and
understanding. Djiwandono (1996: 68) suggests that the aspects involved in
speaking are vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and content.

In carrying out an assessment, of
course there are methods, namely:
Interviews: One-on-one or panel
interviews to assess conversational skills.
Presentations: Prepared or impromptu
speeches to evaluate organization, coherence, and presentation skills.
Role-plays: Simulated real-life
situations to assess practical language use and interaction.
Discussion Groups: Group discussions
to assess interaction skills, ability to hold and share opinions, and
collaborative communication.
Recordings: Analyzing recorded
speeches for detailed assessment.
PRIMARY FORMATS OF SPEAKING
Imitative: Assessing a parrot's capacity to mimic a word, phrase, or sentence
There is a pronunciation test. Examples: Repetition of words, phrases, and
sentences.
Intense: The goal is to produce brief
oral language segments. It is intended to show proficiency in a limited range
of phonological, phrasal, lexical, and grammatical links (stress, rhythm, and
intonation). Sentence completion, limited visual cued activities, reading
aloud, directed response tasks, and sentence level translation are a few
examples of intense evaluation tasks.
Responding: (Shortly exchanging words with the other person) While interaction
and test understanding are included in responsive assessment activities, they
are confined to extremely brief talks, polite greetings and small talk,
straightforward requests and remarks, and similar interactions.
Interactive: The complexity and duration of speech vary between interactive and
responsive speaking.
In order for it to be
concluded To obtain a complete picture of a learner's abilities, an effective
speaking assessment needs a clear framework, precise criteria, and a range of
techniques. To get better, you need to practice frequently and receive
constructive criticism.
